Throughout my four 1/2 years in
Hollywood, there were often times when I had no stunt, fx, weapons OR
acting work. I was (and technically still am) part of a group called
COMBAT CASTING (www.CombatCasting.com).
We did what's called in LA, "Special Abilities" work.

Combat Casting Specializes in Military and Police Scenes. We
know the correct ways
to handle firearms, uniforms, salutes, tactics, forced entries, parade
drills,
swords, etc... Why waste time training an extra when you can get the
real thing?
|
"Special Abilities work pays better, and has a bit more prestige than
"extra" or "background" work. It does NOT,
however, pay as well as stunt work, or get you a credit on the show,
though we are quite often asked to do the exact same things as stunt
people. I stumbled down a stairwell amidst a hail of gunfire and
bullet hits on ALIAS. Also jumped out of a moving car on
ALIAS. I jumped off a 7 foot rock ledge on 24, and spun a car
sideways on NUMBERS. There are more examples but, you get the idea.

Since I moved back to Maine and have a lot of students now, I often
find
myself telling stories about things that happened on these and other sets.
My students then check me out on www.imdb.com
and when they
find no credit... they wonder.

I'm sure there are more but frankly, I can't remember all of them. For
instance, "one episode" often only translates to two or three
days on set. Add these to all the sets I was on doing big jobs and after a
while, they all start to run together. I didn't keep records of
